OSCA Round 2 - Levels Timaru

Levels greeted us for round 2 with a cold gloomy day and it seems that was fitting for what was to unveil to some competitors. During qualifying Dave Agnew had an oil line come free which dumped everything on the track with the final turn coming onto pit straight being the most slippery. Dave ended up spinning on the oil and losing the roof off the Volvo with Colin Dawson doing the same and just managing to keep the RX7 off the pit straight wall. Luckily for him he had already put in a quick time which he held for pole as no-one else could get a good time in due to the slippery conditions.

Race 1 started with the field thundering down the main straight but Leigh Derrick who was visiting Levels for the first time lost the big Ford Coupe going round the top corner and ended up hitting David Gardens immaculate Corvette in the rear before riding the outside embankment. This brought out the red flag but luckily the fellas were all ok...not so for the cars. Raymond Hart made a blinder of a start at the restart in the 4wd Skyline but the gap soon closed and Dawson's rear soon had a Skyline implant in it. Once the race got underway a great race long duel between Dawson and Hatton ensued as they had done at Powerbuilt Tools Raceway at the previous round and it was Dawson who took race 1 with Hatton taking one last lunge at the finish line and just coming up short by 0.090 and then promptly leaving the track at turn 1. Hart held off Bruce Davidson's Corvette by a similar margin in another race long battle with Garth Somerville taking the final top 5 spot. Agnew took no further part in the meeting and Russell Mortimer holed his Radiator so was off to Timaru to get that fixed.

Race 2 was the reverse grid and it was Garden and Somerville off the front since Mortimer didn't get the radiator fixed in time and Derrick was out. Garden had the Corvette rear end fixed up and got off to a great start but it was Hatton who got through to the lead with Dawson 2nd. Garden held off Davidson for 3rd with Hart 5th after suffering top gear issues.

Mortimer was back for race 3 and he took the lead from the front with Somerville hot on his heels. Hart, Davidson and Garden all took off together and had a great race long battle with the corvettes doing all they could to take down the skyline but to no avail as Hart held them at bay by the narrowest margins. Hatton and Dawson left the line last and half way around the last lap just made their way past the middle group but ran out of time to catch the front two. The finishing order being Mortimer, Somerville, Hatton, Dawson, Hart, Garden & Davidson.

Levels also hosts the 3rd round and we should see the return of Wayne Ross, Pierre Neame, Leighton Hill etc. Even though the fields have been small the racing between a few of the guys has been fierce and with only 2 points between the top 2 the title fight looks like being a full season long battle. Hopefully we will finally get a good weekend weather wise for the next round and we hope to see you all there with your cars or in support.
