Big,
powerful saloon cars head the bill at the second motor race meeting
of the season at Teretonga Park in Invercargill this Sunday.
The event, presented by Fulton Hogan Ltd, will feature one of the
most popular categories of racing that visits the track each year -
the mighty OSCA Saloon cars. This category features a number of big,
loud and fast, modified V8 engined race cars.
Two of the frontrunners in the category are Invercargill
competitors, Lawrence Knowler in his Brennan Camaro and Colin Dawson
in his Mazda RX8. Knowler has twice been the OSCA Champion and
qualified fastest last weekend at Timaru but had troubles with the
starting procedure while the Camaro also threw an oil pump pulley in
the final race. He still managed a 2nd and 4th place finish although
his crew were checking the engine after the meeting to ensure it had
suffered no major damage. Dawson had an exceptionally good day at
Timaru winning the first race of the day and then adding two 3rd
placings to make a great start to the series.
Other top competitors include Christchurch drivers Matt Cronin
(Toyota Levin), Dave Agnew (Volvo C70), Geoff Washbourne (Holden
Commodore) and Evan Munt in his Chev Capri. Cronin is always quick
and won a race at Timaru while Agnew in his turbocharged 2 litre
Volvo finished in the top three in every race last weekend.
Other classes on the menu this weekend include the South Island
Formula Ford Championship. One of the top runners this weekend could
well be John Whelan of Dunedin. Whelan has competed in Clubmans
racing at the track in a Honda in recent times and has now moved to
single seat racing cars. However he has a karting pedigree and has
adapted to the cars very quickly. Steve Heffernan will be the top
local hope in the Formula Ford category.
The Noel McIntyre Drainage Clubmans Saloons will also be back on
track for Round 2 of their 2006/2007 Championship. Dawson may also
be seen running in this class while several other big saloons such
as the Capri's of Allan Pulley and Pierre Neame plus the Falcon of
Brent Stirling will also take part. The Clubmans Series features
plenty of diverse motor vehicles with everything from the big
bangers to a range of Nissan's, Toyota's, Honda's, Holden's,
Mitsubishi's, Ford's and a lone Hillman Imp.
The action commences at 11am on Sunday. Admission is $10 while
children under 14 are free.
