After the action of Round 1 of the NZ OSCA
Championship competitors were eager to get to Levels Raceway for Round 2
the following week. Again the front row was a Greenslade and Knowler
benefit but as the race progressed a train behind Greenslade in the form
of Knowler, Jones, Rooney and Cronin were ducking and diving trying to
make headway of the car in front. As the field came into the hairpin for
the last time yellow flags were out which Knowler adhered to almost too
much. Jones saw an opportunity and as they came into the last corner
with the yellow flags relinquished Jones took to the inside and pushed
passed taking Rooney with him with Cronin not quite having enough track
left to make the pass. The crowd were on their feet as this was a great
finish to an already exciting race. Just a few car lengths back was
Hatton followed by Burgess, Cundall, Washbourne and Hart rounding out
the top ten, all trying to battle the heat as well as the other fellas
on track.
Laine Etwell made good on his pole position in race two after being
disqualified from qualifying then having a rubbing is racing moment in
the first race which didn't leave him with a fast lap. He shot away to
take the win with Greenslade making light work of the traffic to get
through to second. Burgess had done a great job also getting through to
third just holding out the V8's of Rooney and Hatton. Hart started in
the first group also and held onto sixth but by the narrowest margin as
Jones, Due, Knowler, Ross and Cundall finished in that order with the
group just 3 seconds behind.
The V8's of Washbourne, King Turner and
Amanda Tulloch who made her OSCA debut in her Tier 2 Falcon rounded out
the top fifteen.
Race three's handicap was spoiled a little by some yellow flags that
were being displayed a little too long which hindered a few passing
opportunities but didn't stop the on track action as King Turner held on
to cross the line by a thread to the closing pack of Due and Hatton who
finished just a second behind. Unfortunately both King Turner and Due
had run foul of the handicap rules which dropped them back to 9th and
13th respectively and gave the win to a very happy Hatton with his first
win in the Hatton Horsefloats Camaro. Stewart was second closely
followed by Cronin who got the better of a race long duel with Jones
which saw them swap positions a number of times. Tulloch held onto a
very respectable fifth with Burgess, Knowler then Greenslade all in hot
pursuit. The top ten all finishing within seven seconds so a great
effort by the handicapper. Just a few seconds back from Greenslade was
Hart, Etwell and Cundall all crossing the line within 0.7 of a second.
So after two rounds of the 2008 NZ OSCA Championship it is Andy
Greenslade with the points lead and Cameron Jones 2nd with Tim Rooney
3rd. The North narrowly lead the South in the island title with the
remaining two North rounds to go in March. The South Island
Championship's final two rounds doubled as the first two rounds of the
NZ Championship and has given two time Champion Lawrence Knowler another
Overall title so congratulations to him. Raymond Hart won GT2 with Laine
Etwell taking the GT3 title and Garth Somerville GT4.
