The final two rounds of the Keflord Cams OSCA
Supersaloons New Zealand Championship to be help at Taupo Easter weekend
and the following weekend at Manfeild.
The first two rounds held in the South Island had fields of around 28
cars. Current entries for the Taupo round indicate that there will be
more than a full field of 30 cars. Organisers are expecting at least 25
North Island cars and up to 9 South Island cars. This will mean that
competitors will need to qualify with only the fastest 30 getting to
race.
The scene is set for some very exciting racing with 30 of New Zealand’s
fastest saloon cars fighting it out for National Championship, North
Island and South Island Championship points.
Despite having a huge power disadvantage, Brian Gray from Tauranga
currently has his Mazda RX7 in second place in the championship. Brian
is always very competitive at Taupo with the tight nature of the
Centennial Park Circuit at Taupo much more suited to his car that the
fast South Island Tracks.
The following weekend at Manfeild will see the GT1 Tranzam cars joining
the field and boosting the numbers to around 40 cars for the grand
final.
Open Saloon or Sports Sedan racing has had a major resurgence of late,
primarily due to the alignment of the North and South Island rules and
the advent of the National Championship. OSCA now boasts one the largest
fields of cars at most events. With the number of new cars being built
or imported, it looks like the 2005/06 Championship will be even bigger.
