Firstly on behalf of OSCA I would like to wish Edwin (who has helped
Wayne Ross over a number of years) all the best with his health after
suffering a serious heart attack last week which has left him in
intensive care. Our thoughts are with you and we hope you make a full
recovery and see you at the track soon.
On a slightly better note the first round of the OSCA series has come
and gone and even though round 1 numbers were not the best the coming
rounds before Xmas look like having quite good fields, in numbers and in
variety. Unfortunately for Powerbuilt Tools Raceway the weather was not
the best in the morning with drizzly rain until midday which would have
kept alot of potential spectators away. None of the classes had more
than 14 cars which was a disappointment sitting on the bank but maybe
the car clubs need to look of ways to help out competitors a little
better financially in these economic times as I'm guessing this is the
main reason why numbers are down over all classes. MSNZ must have some
blame in this also as over the past 6-7 years we have had the message
that there are too many classes yet in that time more have been added
which is simply thinning the fields further. Tier 1 meeting at Taupo
only attracted 9 Mini Challange cars, 13 NZ Formula Fords and a combined
field of Tier 1 and 2 V8's of only 28 where there were at least 28 Tier
1 cars alone last season.
Anyway back on OSCA.... Welcome to Leigh Derrick with his awesome XA
Coupe. Its great to have a car of this fashion running in OSCA as it
looks and sounds how an OSCA car should (in my opinion). Congrats to
Colin Dawson for keeping the coupe behind him for 4 laps in the first
race as many a man would have simply let the beast go through for fear
of getting run over! Good to see Russell Mortimer having a good run and
winning the final race. The car looks great so good luck for the rest of
the season. Unfortunately Pierre Neame who travelled from Invercargill
had engine problems on the Saturday along with Wayne Ross but Im sure we
will see them again soon.
So after round 1 Chris Hatton who took pole and 2 wins has the points
lead from Dawson who struggled with brake problems and Mortimer and Dave
Agnew are tied for 3rd. Agnew now has the rotary in the Volvo and once
he gets the gearing sorted he'll be pushing the top 2 for sure. Timaru
is the next round which is a 1 day Saturday meeting on October 18. The
field should be joined by the Davidson Corvette, Leighton Hills Levin
(after he blows the cobwebs off) and a few others so the meeting should
be a good one. Get to the track, support the guys and tell some tales
over the bar as that as we all know is where the racing is really won!
